Obituary — Robert A. Billings
Memorial services took place Sept. 12 at Merced, Calif., for Robert A. Billings, who died Sept. 6, 2003, at Clovis, Calif. He was 70.
Mr. Billings was born July 8, 1933, at Oakland, Calif. He grew up in Pleasant Hill, Calif., where he participated in a variety of sports including track and swimming. He began playing golf while in high school and developed a passion for the game. He ultimately chose a career in golf and first job was as golf pro at Colusa Country Club, Colusa, Calif. In 1970 he became the head golf professional at Merced Golf & Country Club, where he remained for 18 years. Mr. Billings spent several seasons as the teaching professional at Lake Tahoe County Club, South Lake Tahoe. He was an excellent golfer and his accomplishments included winning the NCPGA Senior Match Play Championships. He was a life member of The Professional Golfers Association of America.
He was a committed family man and was dedicated to his children. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and camping and attending county fairs. Some of his happiest times were spent camping with his family. In his later years he enjoyed trips to Disney resorts with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by son, Rob Billings; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Rutledge; and grandchildren, Nicholas and Courtney Billings and Jenna and Couper Rutledge.
