Old prescribed burn reignites in high winds

A firefighter hoses down a hot spot on Kingsbury Grade. High winds reignited embers from an old prescribed burn into a 10- to 12-acre fire early Tuesday morning.

Embers from a weeks-old prescribed burn off Kingsbury Grade reignited into a 10-12 acre fire early Thursday morning.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District firefighters first responded to the call of a fire off Andria Drive at 3 a.m. Thursday morning. By 11 a.m. around 80 members of the Nevada Division of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service and the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District were working to keep the fire from spreading outside the prescribed burn boundaries.

“The fire is putting out active embers outside of the prescribed burn area, so we’re trying to secure the boundaries,” said Forest Service fire prevention officer Beth Brady.

The prescribed burn was started two weeks ago. Forest Service crews checked the area daily for any sign of live embers. No sign of fire was apparent until high winds picked up last night, Brady said.

Fire crews will monitor the fire while winds persist, at least through today and tomorrow. The Forest Service is urging the public to stay away from the fire area.
