Olympic medalist Weibrecht needs shoulder surgery

The Associated Press

ADELBODEN, Switzerland – Olympic bronze medalist Andrew Weibrecht will miss the rest of the Alpine skiing season to have surgery on his left shoulder.

Weibrecht said Friday it was “incredibly disappointing” to miss the World Cup downhill races and the world championships next month at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

“I’ve got a long career ahead of me and right now it’s more important to be smart and come back fully prepared for next winter,” Weibrecht said in a statement from the U.S. Ski team.

The 24-year-old racer dislocated his shoulder two weeks ago in training at Hinterreit, Austria. He also had surgery on his right shoulder after the Olympic season.

In Vancouver last February, Weibrecht placed third in the super-G behind Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway and teammate Bode Miller.
