‘On Your Way’ award earners named

Dylan Sher and Melissa Smith, students at Meyers Elementary School, received the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra “On Your Way” award for December.

Dylan is in Holly Weston’s third-grade class. “Dylan has made huge improvements in both reading and writing,” Weston said.

Dylan’s favorite book is “Wingman on Ice” by Matt Christopher because it’s about ice hockey. He said what he likes about reading is, “I can picture things in my mind when I read. I like reading books more than seeing the movie.”

Melissa is in Aimee Rice’s fourth-grade class. “Melissa is the perfect recipient for the On Your Way award because of her dedication to learning and her enthusiasm toward her education. She’s a model student,” Rice said.

What Melissa likes about reading is, “I like to find out what happened in the book.” Her favorite book is “Holes” by Louis Sachar. Melissa’s sister, Kimberly, received the “On Your Way” award in December 2000. Apparently the desire to read runs in the family.

The On Your Way award is presented each month to elementary students who have worked very hard to improve his or her reading skills. Promoting literacy in youth is one of the missions of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. Each recipient receives a document of award, a $25 gift certificate for a bookstore and a special presentation at her or her school. In addition, the Soroptimist will donate “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” to the Meyers school library in Dylan’s and Melissa’s names.
