OPEN Appraisal Faire slated

Staff reports

Twenty evaluators and appraisers will be on hand at the Sept. 23 Antique Appraisal Faire sponsored by the Ordinary People Meeting Extraordinary Needs organization. The fund-raiser will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The event has a limit of six items per person. The cost is $7 for one item or $20 for three and must be cash payments only. All items to be appraised must be hand carried and secured against accidental damage. Assistance with heavy or bulky items will be available from Tahoe Turning Point. People with large furniture should bring a color photo. The six item limit does not apply to postcards, phonographic records, collectible card games, comic books, stock certificates or autographs.

The appraisers and evaluators have many years of expertise and experience. Most are returning from OPEN’s 2000 faire, which was a very successful and well attended event. New to the faire this year will be D.A. Russo, a Tahoe resident, who in 1949 was the recipient of the Stephen David Epstein Memorial Scholarship. Because of his talent and community service Russo was selected from 300,000 students to study anywhere in the world for one year. He chose to study with Picasso.

During the time he spent with Picasso, Russo lived in the artist’s villa in France, traveled and observed the master at work, and was instructed by Picasso in various art forms and styles. Russo went on to receive degrees in art and physical education from the University of California, Los Angeles and worked in the California schools system as an art instructor and coach until his recent retirement. He now plans to devote all his time to his creative ventures.

Ordinary People Meeting Extraordinary Needs is a charitable organization that helps residents around Lake Tahoe pay for health costs not covered by insurance policies or from lack of adequate funds. Russo has generously offered to help the Antique Fair by appraising any art media, whether antique or modern. For more information call (530) 541-1722.
