Opening practices set for STHS, Whittell teams

Nevada prep football teams can officially begin practice on Thursday.

South Tahoe High School plans to begin its preseason camp on Thursday, while Whittell will kick off on Friday.

The remainder of the Whittell and South Tahoe athletics teams are scheduled to begin practice Monday.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association requires its high school football teams to begin the season with three days of conditioning before moving into full-contact workouts.

South Tahoe will condition from 3:30 through 5:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8:30-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the school’s Field of Dreams. Starting on Monday, South Tahoe will practice twice a day at 9-11:45 a.m. and 3:30-5:45 p.m. in Viking Bowl.

The Vikings will be directed by new varsity coach Kevin Hennessee.

Whittell second-year varsity coach David Atherton has scheduled for a double workout on Friday – 9-11 a.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. – on the main field at the school. Subsequent practice schedules will be determined daily by the coaching staff.

“I want to keep the kids on their toes,” Atherton said.

Both Whittell and South Tahoe will open their seasons with nonleague games. The Vikings will play host to Dayton on Aug. 29, while the Warriors will travel to Silver Stage on Sept. 5.

Opening practice times for Whittell’s other falls sports include cross country (Lindsay Wines), 9-10:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday at the school; girls’ golf (Ron Blum), 2:30-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course; boys’ soccer (Steve Maltase), 8-11 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. Monday through Friday at Whittell; girls’ soccer (Tony Cormier), 7-8 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Whittell; and volleyball (Tony Fathergill), 3-5 p.m. for varsity and 5-7 p.m for junior varsity Monday through Friday in the school’s gym.

First-day practice schedules on Monday for STHS’s other fall sports are: boys’ soccer (Chris DeLeon), 7-9 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School; girls’ soccer (Clint Lockhart), 7-8:30 a.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College and 5-7 p.m. at Tahoe Valley Elementary School; girls’ golf (Marsha Butler), 3-5 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Golf Course; boys’ tennis (Justin Clark), 8 a.m. at school courts; girls’ tennis (Jenny Clark), 3-5 p.m. at school courts; volleyball (Meghan Reid), 3 p.m. in school’s blue gym; boys’ and girls’ cross country (Dominique Westlake, Dan Wilvers), 8:30 a.m. at the school’s football field.

Athletes must complete clearance forms and receive a physical exam – if required – before they can begin workouts. Under NIAA rules, an athlete must complete at least 10 practices before they can be allowed to participate in a game.

STHS freshmen and juniors are also required to take a concussion test. Makeup concussion testing is from 1-3 p.m. Thursday at the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Office at 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd.

Sports are also nearing for sixth through eighth-graders at South Tahoe Middle School and seventh- and eighth-graders at Whittell.

STMS student athletes can pick up paperwork for their sport at the school office. If an an athlete hasn’t played a prior sport at the middle school, he or she will need a physical exam before being cleared to practice with their team.

To prepare for the upcoming season, open gyms are being offered for the STMS girls’ basketball teams. The eighth-grade team is meeting from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at STMS. Mike Neiger and Eric Aquino are conducting the open gyms.

For seventh-graders, open gyms begin Wednesday from 7-8:30 a.m. at STMS. Beth Aiton and Jillian Raymond will oversee the open gyms, which are scheduled for Monday through Friday until tryouts on Aug. 21.

STMS will opens its basketball season at home on Sept. 8. Cross-country running’s season opener is set for Sept. 11 at North Tahoe, and workouts have already started. Interested runners should go to

Whittell seventh-and eighth-grade girls’ basketball coaches Paul Tracy and Tom Esposito are earmarking Aug. 24 for the start of practice. Practices are from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Kingsbury Middle School.
