Paul Middlebrook, Tahoe Daily Tribune

OSCAR’S HOME! Great ending to a touching story. Congrats to the Shaw family. I do suspect, though, that Oscar was just out delivering more Tribunes.

Spring is here … the season when I buy my sons their batting gloves and cleats and long underwear for Charlene and me. Hot dogs; hot chocolate, hot coffee, hot pretzels.

Speaking of baseball, I was the emcee for both the Little League season opener and the Babe Ruth baseball opener. Hats (baseball) off to the board members, coaches and parents who helped put the seasons together. A massive and sometimes thankless job very well done. If you are ever looking for some great fun and a good $1 hot dog, stop by the ball fields any night or weekend.

How about that ice arena? If you have not yet stopped by to see it, you must do so. Hockey leagues are forming and games start soon. Congratulations go out to the city of South Lake Tahoe and Gary Moore and staff. Congratulations and good luck goes out to John Collins of the Recreation Department, who replaces Gary at the Senior Center.

I was talking with a former Tribune employee the other day and we were discussing how many people in town have worked for the Tahoe Daily Tribune. In the next month or so, we will have a barbecue here at the paper and want to invite all Tribune alumni to stop by, have a burger and we’ll get a photo of all of us. We’ll let you know when.

“Vail seals deal” says the headline. Good news for Heavenly Ski Resort and the South Shore as Vail Resorts is a heavy capitalized and quality organization. I had a great meeting a few weeks back with their senior vice president of public affairs, Porter Wharton III. (Do you love that name or what? Would Vail send a guy named Bob?) Vail Resorts plans some very exciting things for Heavenly.

What are the kids doing? Congratulations to Zack Powers, Ansel Robinson, Jason Schmedes and Jeff Koeck, swimmers for South Tahoe High School. They are off to state, the first time South Tahoe High has sent a relay team in seven years. Good job guys, and good job to coach Bogard.

Have you been following the golf teams at both Whittell and South Tahoe High School? These kids are shooting to 3 to 8 handicaps. How rude, you buy your child golf clubs, give them lessons, buy a round of golf and they beat your pants off. Ah, but then there is the scholarship thing. I played golf while I was at college, not on the team, usually during my econ classes.

And good luck from the entire community to the Sierra House Elementary School Destination Imagination team. Over the Memorial Day weekend, they are off to the world championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

To Tori and the rest of the family of Larry Levi, our condolences. He was a great father, a good man, a good friend and he will be missed.
