Editorial: Boosting the college for all our benefit

Just like with our South Tahoe K-12 schools, Lake Tahoe Community College is suffering from declining enrollment, and will be cutting staff to deal with declining revenues. That staff reductions need to happen is fairly obvious – LTCC has seen $1.3 million in decreased revenues since the 2003-2004 school year – but there is a way the community can help.

LTCC is part of the linchpin that makes South Tahoe a viable community, and community members should take advantage of this invaluable institution. In addition to the educational opportunities, the college gives us a cultural, social and athletic venue. And it is a resource the community could put to better use.

Next quarter, when you receive LTCC’s class schedule, consider taking a class or two: Find your passion or learn a new language. The college offers everything from Microsoft Excel spreadsheet courses to photojournalism (taught by our own Jim Grant).

It only takes a few new students to stave off the losses. Every seat filled at the college provides valuable money to fund the college’s outstanding curriculum and facilities.

Like the larger community, LTCC is affected by extreme social changes. As the cost of living and real estate continues to skyrocket, more families are moving off the hill. More students are ostensibly looking elsewhere for affordable places to attend college. The college has to deal with that reality. But by being more proactive and more engaged with one of our more important local institutions, as residents we can do our part to help.
