Editorial: Joke’s on us

This week’s April Fool’s joke put on by the Lakeside Casino as an insert into the Tribune certainly got some folks’ attention. The buzz it created reminded us that, at least once a year, we have to be able to laugh at ourselves.

The ad suggested a possible development including a skyrise casino and a zip line across Emerald Bay – and also suggested the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency was fully supportive. It made us laugh. We hope it made you laugh, too.

We also know it’s risky as a newspaper to play jokes on our readers and for that, we hope you forgive us. We never mean to mislead our readers, and hope everyone got the joke – at least, eventually.

You will read the follow-up ad in Friday’s print edition alerting the community that the insert was, in fact, a joke. Yet another story we posted this week illustrates why we feel it is so important to laugh. With nearly 1-in-5 in the Lake Tahoe Basin unemployed, and little prospect for a speedy recovery, it’s going to be a rough 2010. All we ask our community is that, every once in a while, we can take a step back and giggle.

Frankly, it might be the healthiest thing any of us do all year.
