Editorial: Partying into 2006: Don’t be humiliated

New Year’s Eve is a big event for South Lake Tahoe, the time when we close down the street, flood the town with visitors and let it all hang out. But a word of caution to visitors: Beware of big brother.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies who manage the up to 65,000 visitors who crowd Stateline may be giving out a dose of shame with that citation this year. Revelers convicted of bad behavior may be forced to submit to having their name appear in their local newspaper if they are convicted of being disorderly, drunk in public, or a minor in possession of alcohol, along with an apology and 20 hours of community service at home.

Last year, law enforcement arrested 28 partiers, 67 the year before, and 86 in 2002-2003. Some of those arrested had to take out ads in their local paper with a scripted apology: “I was arrested and convicted of criminal misbehavior in Stateline, Nevada. Lake Tahoe is a great place to visit and vacation, but please remember to behave responsibly. I didn’t, so I was sentenced to — days in the Douglas County Jail. As a condition of my release, I agreed to publish this reminder to others.”

Have fun, party, go wild. But unless it’s worth the humiliation, keep your behavior in check. And have a happy 2006.
