I admit it: Dodgers are my team

Paul Middlebrook

By the time you read this, I will have: A) Seen Barry Bonds hit number 600 on Thursday, B) Not seen Barry hit 600 or C) He hit 600 on Wednesday and I wasted $200 bucks to see a Giants game when I’m a Dodger fan. OK, so now you know … I’m also a Rams and Lakers fan. E I’ve come out, and feel better for it!

Congratulations to Dennis Harmon for receiving an award for his efforts in the redevelopment program. Dennis has been a staunch supporter of our business community and a great community leader. He led Heavenly Ski Resort through some tough times and will be greatly missed. A class act all the way.

Speaking of Heavenly, they have a new CEO. His name is Blaise Carrig. The first gentleman I met from Vail Resorts was Porter Wharton III. Porter Wharton III … Blaise … ya gotta know they have a guy named Biff coming in soon … and the new ski instructor … Muffy.

Congratulations to the South Tahoe Middle School Symphonic Band. They played at Disneyland on June 10. How cool is that? If you have never attended one of the concerts with the school bands … do so this year. What the Lake Tahoe Unified School District does with music programs is the other side of incredible. Kudos to J.J. Clause and to the band director Linda Kurek.

I’ve mentioned it before, but I will do so again. Great job to the school district and Lake Tahoe Community College for the Kids and Youth in College program over the summer. I have yet to talk with a parent who didn’t enjoy what the program offered for the children. Let’s make sure it happens again next year.

On several occasions over the summer I have witnessed the TRPA patrol boat discuss two-stroke engines with sailboat owners and jet ski owners. The politeness shown by the two gentlemen on the boat has been phenomenal … great public relations for our area. (Tell Juan I said something nice about the TRPA … stand back, he may faint)

We should all raise a glass to the staff at the South Tahoe Public Utility District for their hard-fought battle over the MTBE issue. Monies will be coming back to the district for the cleanup, which has already begun. Thanks from the community to the board and staff!

South Tahoe Public Utility District or STPUD … then there is the TRPA, LTVA, TOT, BMP, TTD, NDOT, PUC. Have you ever gone to a meeting and everyone is speaking in fluent acronym? Generally, two minutes into it I have no idea who or what they are talking about. South Lake Tahoe Chamber Director Duane Wallace came up with a little multiple-choice test on a few of these acronyms. BMPEA.) Something you hit on the road, like a pothole B.) Advanced stages of acne, or C.) Best Management Practices. TOTEA) A small child B) A popular kind of tater, or C) Transient Occupancy Tax. The answers in my next column. The winners get to call Duane and tell him he needs more to do.

Be nice to a tourist. See you soon.
