Kudos & Kindness: Sierra Tract is again Tahoe-Sierra

I recently sent an email to our city leaders requesting they look into changing the name of Sierra Tract (a name our neighborhood abhors) back to its original and proper subdivision name of “Tahoe-Sierra.” I included references to the original subdivision name from some historical documents. I asked the city to consider my request in their overall approach to improve the image of South Lake Tahoe, as well as support our neighborhood pride by restoring our cool neighborhood name designation.

I was excited to receive an email from city manager Nancy Kerry advising me that my information was correct. She had forwarded the email to staff in development services as well as public works, who did additional research and found the original name was Tahoe Sierra Subdivision. It had somehow changed when a plan area statement was adopted (at least 25 years ago), and that will be changed when a new plan area statement or area plan is adopted.

In the meantime, the city will begin using the name Tahoe-Sierra where feasible and practical, and refer to this area as Tahoe-Sierra on all reports and documents.

Kudos to the city staff for their curiosity, research and response to my request. The Tahoe-Sierra neighborhood is excited about this change, and invites everyone to drop the term “tract” in its tracks!

We are Tahoe-Sierra, and proud of it.
