Letter: A letter to JoAnn Conner

Dear Ms. Conner

I love that you’re hard-nosed. I love that you speak your mind. I love that you’re passionate and that you want to be a different voice for the community.

But, it is now crystal clear, by multiple accounts, that you walked into a meeting of city employees and threatened them with their jobs. Nancy calls this bullying in her column. I called it unprofessional.

To come out now claiming that the town is being torn apart into fractions, questioning your freedom of speech, comparing this to the McCarthy era (???), quoting a sign ordinance as a root cause of the problems that you’re facing — that infuriates me because you’re creating a smoke screen obscuring the real issue. The common thread has been throughout that your forceful style borders on rudeness. That’s what our city employees perceived and reported. (Let alone other agencies, boards, etc.) There is no room for that in today’s workplace. I applaud Nancy for standing in front of her employees and fighting for her employees’ fears.

Instead of fostering further division in our city, you Ms. Conner could resolve this in a five-minute speech. You should stand up and with all the guts that it takes, admit and apologize that you made some mistakes when confronting city employees and others. Baring this, I am disappointed, very disappointed by your now proven unprofessional behavior; and it gets worse as you attempt to deflect from the real issue.

You, and you alone, have the power to put this to rest.

Respectfully,

Peter Evenhuis

South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
