Letter– Another silly summer from our City Council
Recently the days have gotten warmer, people are thinking more about suntans than shoveling that white stuff and seem to have much more time to demonstrate their true colors. As a very good example, our council person Judy Brown apparently had enough spare time on her hands as to write a letter to the editor that was an attempt, in my opinion, to try to discredit Bill Crawford and his position on the whole budget issue. Instead it have an additional insight into just how petty and pitifully inept our local official really is. She is, and always has been, a follower of the majority in the council. Her ideas have been echoes of previously spoken views and are almost exclusively the popular views expressed by the chamber, LTVA, and the lodging association. Original thought, and a stance opposed to the majority view, is almost totally non-existent. Not only has this been prevalent during her two terms in office. I experienced her methods as an opponent during a past City Council race.
Now, Bill, I guess you made your point again. By recognizing that the budget vote was already set before the formal vote was taken, she chastised you for not jumping on the bandwagon. Your common sense and fiscally responsible stances were, for the most part, ignored by the other four council members. When you demonstrated your displeasure by taking a break during the council session, she tried too make this into a big deal. I wholeheartedly agree with a recent letter by Ty Baldwin and his comments on this issue.
Isn’t it time to make your vote really count this November? Three of the five Council seats will be up for election. Bill Crawford has already indicated his unwillingness to run again, and frankly, after already spending about 12 years on the council, Hal Cole should let someone else have his seats on the very influential boards such as TRPA and finally rejoin private life. I hope that Brooke Laine runs again, and it’s fairly certain that her excellent efforts during the past term will be rewarded with another term. That leaves Brown and Tom Davis as holdovers for another two years.
Isn’t it time for some real independent thinkers, absent of being influenced by the local “power brokers,” to make their presence known and to make an all-out commitment to win a seat? The past too many years have resulted in a powerful majority showing who really runs this community. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see a 2-3 vote once in a while? Even better, wouldn’t it be equally nice to see a vote truly reflect the community’s true wishes?
Crawford, thank you so much for your contributions to the city, and thanks for showing sufficient intestinal fortitude to stand against the tide to make your point. I have grown to appreciate the many times you have been very willing to spend sufficient time to discuss issues with me. We will miss you. Hopefully the “empty” seat to your left on the council will be vacated in just two more years.
