Letter- Apathy about STPUD fees

To the editor:

It seems the Board of Directors of South Tahoe Public Utility District think the public has an “open cash register,” and anytime they feel the need, they can dip into it.

A week ago, the Tahoe Daily Tribune had a front-page article on “affordable housing” and photos of people complaining about high rents.

Where were these people on May 8, when there was a public hearing on the new budget for STPUD?

From a population of 21,000, there were three people who objected to the rate increase.

Since renters do not receive bills directly from STPUD, perhaps they are unaware of the rate hikes for the next five years. They will be 2 percent for water and 3.5 percent for sewer.

Innocence is not bliss, and neither is apathy.
