Letter — Bear killings not justifiable

Tribune

Contrary to Mr. Rick Firkins’ letter printed in the 11/29 edition, the recent slaughter of the three defenseless bears was NOT justifiable under any reasonable premise.

Just how much backbone does it require to put an animal in a cage, and then shoot to kill. Even more disgusting is that two of the three bears were young cubs, just trying to survive nature’s obstacles, much less a devout coward. These cubs simply followed their mother’s lead, during a search for food. A cabin, in the middle of a sparsely populated wilderness area, is a very likely target for such a raid, especially during a very dry, unusual year like this one.

Ms. Rebecca Campbell should be proud of her recent letter in this same issue. Her anger has to result in major changes in policy. Relocation is the only acceptable answer to such a aid. These bears were already in cages, or restrained, so why shoot them?
