Letter — Bill and Harvey would be mad

Labor isn’t respected anymore. I believe Bill Harrah and Harvey Gross would be ashamed that their businesses have shown a disregard for their employees and the community by firing local workers who were doing a good job and hiring a cleaning service from Florida.

This move does nothing to improve service, and in fact decreases it. Now the cleaners wear foreign uniforms and are not accountable to Harrah’s or its guests, a point which Caesar’s decided was paramount. And while Harrah’s invests hours in training new employees, they now have chosen to have people working in their casinos who have not been through their training classes.

Harrah’s claims this move is necessary to cut costs. However, FSS wages are the same as Harrah’s, so where is the cost savings? Could the difference be in management’s salaries? Maybe if Harrah’s cut a few layers of their bloated management structure and reduced a few of the big-wig’s salaries, they wouldn’t feel the need to pinch pennies with low-wage workers.

The outsourcing of graveyard cleaning reflects the current mindset of companies today. Employees are not considered as people. Labor is just a pesky cost on a balance sheet, to be reduced as much as possible by outsourcing and part-time positions. The Enron and WorldCom mentality of profit through any means and that no amount of profit is ever enough, is destructive to the community and personally devastating to employees and their families.
