Letter — Cabin owner mourns death

As a cabin owner at Spring Creek tract, I was horrified to learn of the killing of three bears. There are a number of cabin owners at Spring Creek that are totally opposed to killing bears, especially when the owners of these cabins leave food out and easy access when away for long periods of time, as was the case this week. The fact that no one ever saw which bear broke into this cabin, and that food was used as bait to trap these bears, means that the bears that were killed might never have entered anyone’s cabin. Any bear would be attracted to the food left around.

I am honored to share the wilderness with such magnificent animals. From what I know about black bears, they are amazingly gentle for such large animals, and are relatively easy to scare away when confronted by humans.

We must find a way to stop this killing. The fact that two of the bears were only about 6 months old just adds to the horror. Even fish that are too small must be throw back into the water, if caught. What gives Fish and Game the right to kill such young and innocent animals? Shouldn’t there be a system in place that provided more checks and balances before bears are trapped and shot?

I hope that Spring Creek Tract cabin owners are never again responsible for attracting and then killing these beautiful and special animals.

Sadly,
