Letter- City is stealing from Van Sickel

To the editor:

Sometimes I wonder if the people of South Lake Tahoe will ever wake up and see what’s happening. Last week’s news of the city’s proposal to take Mr. Van Sickel’s land by eminent domain to hand it over to an investment consortium is absolutely criminal! He’s already lost land to redevelopment, and if he doesn’t want to give up Crescent V, he doesn’t have to. It’s his land. How can the government come and take one person’s property and give it to another? Isn’t that theft? If this is allowed to go on, how long will it be before I can go to the city and say that I don’t like the way my neighbor’s house is being kept, want to take it so it will look nicer. It’s the same concept. Yes, we all want South Lake Tahoe to look its best, but not through coercion or theft. This needs to stop.

Also noted in Claire Fortier’s column today that one of her complaints is about her friend’s “real estate” aka property taxes going up. Well, what a surprise. Isn’t that because of Measure S, the ballot initiative that Claire and the paper were so strongly advocating passage of? Can’t have it both ways, folks.

Thanks for letting me vent!
