Letter — Climber OK with column

Congratulations to the Tribune for its insightful editorial regarding climbing at Cave Rock. I have been rock climbing for 20 years and in the past used to spend a great deal of time climbing at “The Cave.” I would regularly bring my infant daughter, who would nap under the safety of the overhanging rock. There is no doubt in my mind that cave rock is a very special, spiritual place. This awareness of the aura of the rock is shared by both climbers and the Washoe tribe.

I took part in each of the public discussion sessions involving climbers and the Washoe in 1998 as well as other private, mediation

sessions. Climbers offered numerous compromises to the Washoe, none of which they would consider. In various climbing publications, we have tried to educate climbers about the tribe’s unhappiness with us being there, but we do not believe an outright ban on all climbing activity is fair or just. Cave Rock is public property and should not be managed as if it were the private property of the Washoe. It is unfortunate that Forest Supervisor Maribeth Gustafson does not believe in the ethos of compromising or sharing.
