Letter: Could mailbox thefts be linked to South Lake Tahoe’s Warm Room’s location?

I am a 40-year resident who lives three blocks from the Warm Room building. We have experienced a rash of mailbox thefts this year. I placed a telltale on my box that shows when it has been opened. It gets opened after midnight several times a month. I haven’t lost any mail because I watch for the delivery and remove my mail immediately, however, some of my neighbors have had mail stolen including prescription drugs.

Many seniors rely on mail order pharmacies because of the outrageous prices elsewhere. For some seniors, a missing prescription refill could be fatal. Last week my friend discovered a pile of abandoned mail (minus the drugs) in the Upper Truckee Marsh across the street. He returned it to the post office. Previous police reports have led to one arrest but the problem persists.

We know how to eliminate attractions for nuisance bears, shouldn’t we stop attracting nuisance humans?
