Letter — Ideas from a city candidate

Here are my recommendations for how to return fiscal discipline to the city. I do not believe in spending money, be it budget, transit occupancy tax, grant matches or reserve funds on the following items: the convention center, the airport, an opulent city hall or the Coordinated Transit System.

I oppose taxation of residents through proposed business and sales tax increases. I would not fund outside organizations like the LTVA, Chamber of Commerce or the Lodging Association.

I would recommend spending money on new snowblowers, plows, emergency vehicles, and competitive compensation for all city employees. Senior and nonprofit programs like Clean Tahoe, free dump days, community cleanup events, covered bus stops and natural gas buses and city vehicles all receive my support.

I would make the following free to city residents: rock for BMPs, bear-proof trash containers and firewood created from making the city forest fire safe. I also support youth and adult sports programs, especially tournaments and events held in Tahoe.

I would create a Department of Tourism and Commerce so the city has complete control of how the city is portrayed and how marketing dollars are spent. These are just some of the things I would strive for if elected.
