Letter (Jerry Bindel): Support Measure P at South Lake Tahoe

Many people have asked the lodging association why we are supportive of Measure P, particularly when it will be the guests at our businesses whose occupancy tax will be increased. As an organization we pride ourselves on supporting both local community and our local economy. We believe that a new recreation center will provide a strong positive attraction for people visiting our city, as well as a great center for all of our locals. But what also swayed us was the inclusion of the Boys and Girls Club in the new development, as they are anticipating losing their current location at Al Tahoe School in the coming year (it’s being turned back into a school).

We are parents, we employ parents, and we know the importance of the Boys and Girls Club to local families and businesses. Having after-school and vacation programs for the many children that use the club daily enables parents to work full-time, which in turn benefits our businesses and our local economy.

The club would be using the recreation center primarily in the hours when it is quiet and little used by the general public. And for those of us who want to attend a class after work, or get a gym membership — we will be able to go to the center and do our activities knowing our kids are at the club, in the same building, and engaged in fun activities of their own.

The lodging association has chosen to put our community first by supporting Measure P and we hope that you too will also vote “Yes” — ensuring that our locals and visitors have a great recreation center to use, and the Boys and Girls Club can continue to provide a vital service to our city.
