Letter — Linear Park does not need sod

Astonishingly, our City Council is seriously considering sodding the Linear Park between Highway 50 and Tahoe Meadows. The cost? First there would be $152,000 to $210,000 to provide water, then there would be the cost of installing sprinklers, the sod, the fertilizer and the regular mowing and other maintenance. The council’s solution? Spread the initial cost over two years.

Is this the same City Council that is squeezing law enforcement, fire protection, street maintenance, and other essential city services in order to balance the budget? Yes. And who seems to be pushing hardest for this spending? Tom Davis and Kathay Lovell.

The Linear Park was carefully planned several years ago to tie together the mountain forest with the shorezone ecology of Tahoe Meadows using low maintenance trees, shrubs and other plants appropriate to our mountain environment. It was and is a good plan.

So it is hard to imagine a more frivolous expenditure of public money from whatever source than the proposed expenditure to sod Linear Park, nor a more outrageous proposal than an alternative advanced by Tom Davis: “sodding” Linear Park with artificial grass. And plastic flowers?
