Letter — Local litterbugs are the bad guys

As a longtime resident on Lake Tahoe’s south shore (born and raised) my immediate assumption to the Gondola Fire was a tourist. Out and about this week, I’ve heard a similar sentiment in the community.

I wish I could be so certain. As a weekly commuter of Kingsbury Grade, however I’ve observed cigarette butts discarded outlocal car windows. State license plates and regional bummer stickers give them away.

The Gondola Fire was a potential catastrophe we can all learn from. I believe to simply blame touristsis a cop out and a missed opportunity for all of us to re-evaluate the manner in which we treat our surroundings and environment.

Not all locals respect and honor the beautiful place we have the good fortune to call home.

Perhaps they’ll discover the culprit was a tourist. I certainly hope the careless act came from an unconscious city type, rather than a sleep walking resident. Whatever we find, let us take the fear, sadness and loss we all felt this July 4th, carry it forward and live consciously.
