Letter — Measure Z is not the answer

MEASURE Z IS A SHAM!!! Its proponents have fabricated a crisis in order to create an urgency to solve the City’s financial problems that have been around for over a decade. To suggest that our safety services are in jeopardy if this measure fails, while the City Council continues to fund a Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority with increased budgets, is outright deception.

I do not believe that this community is that gullible to buy the misleading rhetoric that defends raising more taxes in the form of doubling business license fees and a surcharge on lodging rooms as a responsible means of solving the City’s financial problems as a short-term solution. What is in store for us for the long-term?

As business owners in this community, we can no longer depend on the chamber of Commerce to look after the interests of the retail community. After all, we are the ones responsible for generating the sales tax which the City is dependent upon. For that we bear the punishment. The presumption is that the visitors pay the room tax and therefore it is acceptable, however, with competition for tourist dollars, in spite of redevelopment, becoming very competitive, it isn’t a “slam dunk.”

I am sorry to say that this is City Government at its worst. i would urge this community to turn out in number on November 5 and Vote NO ON MEASURE Z so that the special interests will not control the outcome.
