Letter — Native vegetation should not be removed

So the city of South Lake Tahoe wants to tear out native vegetation in order to improve the appearance of the Linear Park. Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? Why replace native plants with a sterile-looking expanse of lawn when there are so many beautiful native plants that could be used in that area?

I have noticed the area looks “unkempt.” It looks this way because it is so sparsely planted. Adding more natives such as wild currant, serviceberry, flax, penstemon, wild buckwheat, California fuschia and lupine, to name a few, would substantially improve the appearance of the area. Native plants do not require fertilizer (which encourages weeds). Once established, these plants would require almost no maintenance and no supplemental watering. I can imagine it would cost much less to put in more plants than completely redo the area.

The bumper sticker article on page five, mere inches away from the Linear Park article, contains the statement: “Native vegetation should be planted and protected wherever possible.” I certainly think it’s possible to maintain the native vegetation at the Linear Park. I would much rather see an expanse of flowering plants along Highway 50 than another lawn.
