Letter — NIMBY in the valley
I am a new resident to the area having relocated from the San Diego area. I was interested in the Douglas County Clear Creek Ranch project and went down to the courthouse to hear the presentation.
I left the commission meeting impressed with the quality of the Clear Creek project. The presentation was nothing short of spectacular. I am excited to have a quality project located in this county.
I was, however, saddened by comments and actions during the meeting itself. Of the 18 or so persons who spoke out against the project, nearly half had the same old NIMBY (not in my back yard) attitudes I have heard before. It was interesting to note that most were California transplants who want to shut the doors to the county and keep everyone else away. Finally, I was shocked to see that after a serious and reasoned commissioner debate and vote, project opponents Judy Sturgis and Ralf Elvick “rushed” the commissioners with pointed fingers and threatening voices while the meeting was still in session. If this had happened where I came from, these persons would have been arrested on the spot. I hope tolerance is a two-way street.
