Letter: Of birds and bears

I haven’t seen any peregrine falcons nesting around Cave Rock this year (I did last year though). Peregrines derive their name from the word “peregrinate,” which means to travel; and peregrines travel thousands of miles from the time they leave the nest.

Although I haven’t seen any peregrines this year, I have seen lots of bears. In fact, I saw one last night on top of a dumpster outside my apartment. I turned a flashlight on it, and it took off like a bat out of … well, a bear out of a dumpster! I think this was the same bear that’s been dumping garbage cans late at night on our street (Spruce) looking for food.

So, fellow Tahoians, get yourself some bear-proof garbage cans, OK? Do it before these bears wind up paying the price for what they think is an easy food source. I’ve seen about four bears this week so far on the South Shore, so they’re all over, so be careful out there at night especially. I have noticed that a bright light (flashlight or car light brights) will usually scare them off. Or you can call animal control; but whatever you do, don’t go near them.

So, no peregrines, but lots of bears about. There are also lots of coyotes and squirrels and raccoons this year. This is Tahoe though, so there will be wildlife around. Just make sure to respect it, and stay safely away from it.
