Letter — Parking validation not working correctly

Small-town locals are not accustomed to paying for parking while they shop, so the new rates (half-hour free with validation and half-hour rates thereafter) are certainly an improvement over $3 per hour. However, my experience was less than pleasant. My children and I purchased ice cream, but when I asked if they would validate my parking ticket, I was told they didn’t have any validation stickers and I should try the gondola. When I did so, I was told they were out of stickers and I could try another store, such as the juice store. They told me they only validate tickets for their own customers, and that most stores have a minimum purchase requirement because the validation tickets are expensive. When I paid my $3.50 for parking (rather than the expected $1.75, or even the $3 under the old rate), I mentioned to the attendant that I had expected the ice cream store to validate the first half-hour but that they didn’t have stickers. He said he had given them stickers yesterday.

The Marriott-area merchants may complain that locals think of their stores as expensive tourist shops, but that is not a false perception. Additionally, tourists are used to paying for parking, but locals aren’t. After the treatment I received today, it will be a long time before I use the parking garage again.
