Letter — Please save Sierra House

Tribune

I am writing as a concerned parent in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

We moved to Lake Tahoe from Australia over two years ago and researched extensively using the Internet to find a location, which would suit our family’s lifestyle and educational needs.

My husband and I are both professionals in town and wanted to provide a great education for our two children. We have been extremely happy with our choice of Sierra House Elementary School and Tahoe Parents Nursery School. We chose Sierra House School for its continual excellence in education.

My concern if Sierra House School is to close, with the drop of 200 students from the district, that professionals will not choose our local community to settle and we will be jeopardizing our community growth. This would lead to further declining enrollment. Those families already established in the school’s boundaries may choose to leave the community, as the value of their homes could be less without a “great school” close by. The first question families usually ask is “How is the school in this area?”

I hope the LTUSD Board of Education will not take this situation lightly and will think of the greater outcome to the whole community.
