Letter — Reasons why we changed schools
Not every family has a choice between a private or public education. But, speaking for a family who does, I would like to express some our reasons for leaving St. Theresa for LTUSD. We based most of the reasons not on what St. Theresa’s does not offer, but on what LTUSD does.
The LTUSD offers a comprehensive music program. Mrs. Sweatt, the music instructor at St. Theresa, is wonderful and was instrumental in my children’s developing an appreciation for music. Unfortunately, her programs are only concentrated on primarily during holidays. There are not enough instruments or variety of instruments. She is the only paid music teacher for 180 students. We’re thrilled with music classes already offered in the elementary and middle schools my children attend.
LTUSD has always supported Tahoe Arts Project programs. TAP is a non-profit organization that brings cultural and performing arts to all South Lake K-12 students on both sides of the state line. LTUSD has also generously allowed TAP to hold many events, including the Lake Tahoe Festival of Fine Arts, on their grounds. Every parent, teacher and school should welcome and support TAP.
We’re impressed with what we have heard and seen and the variety of physical education programs offered at the middle school. There is still physical education in the elementary schools. The fact that the PE instructors in LTUSD break a sweat along with their students shows dedication.
Although learning foreign languages is all very well and good, in America it’s probably more important first to concentrate on English. At least in middle school a student taking a foreign language is one who appreciates learning it.
There is so much more to a child’s growth than reading, writing and arithmetic. A well-rounded child has also been allowed to express their individualism, participate in music, sports and theater.
St. Theresa gave my children a good foundation, but it was only a foundation. We have many more reasons for choosing LTUSD and believe the needs of students are being met. My children feel empowered and are anxious to build on their uniqueness, talents and knowledge with all that LTUSD can teach them.
