Letter: South Lake Tahoe recreation center needs better pricing, upgrades
I would like to express my disappointment in our [South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex]. The gym pricing is extremely expensive in comparison to the other health centers in town. I recently priced a one-year membership at Fitness Evolution at $199. This includes full use of all facilities with business hours Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and weekend hours until 7 p.m. A punch card at the rec center lasts approximately four to six weeks if you exercise four to five times weekly. This translates to a cost of about $800 annually. The only annual pass offered translates to a cost of $880 annually for a family. I have inquired about an individual annual pass before only to be told no! I understand there is a cost to maintain a swimming pool, but I have not ever used the pool. I would like to suggest there be separate pricing for the gym.
The other issue I would like to address is the fitness equipment itself.
Many pieces are patched together by duct tape. The carpet is ripped and torn. This morning I almost fell off a weight bench because the screws that should secure it to the base are all missing on one side. The WiFi connection is hit-or-miss.
The positive of the rec center is the staff. I have always found the majority of them to be friendly and pleasant.
I have been a member of the rec center for about five years and an active member of our community for about 25 years. I have heard this sentiment expressed from others as I work out in the morning and felt it needed to be brought to your attention. I am proud to live in our community, but I am embarrassed this is how we represent ourselves at our community center.
