Letter — Spring Creek looks ahead

As a member of the Spring Creek community, and as a person who respects wildlife, I am disgusted with Fish and Game and its sovereign authority over wildlife. In its brochure, “Living With California Black Bears,” DFG states: “People have a responsibility to the wildlife whose habitat they are sharing.” (I guess the cabin owners who requested the bears’ removal and DFG personnel don’t appreciate this concept.)

A responsible cabin owner would leave no food in an unoccupied structure, and would adequately secure all entrances; a responsible wildlife agency would have multiple procedures in place to deter bears without killing them.

At Spring Creek Tract, for over two years now, my family’s been following the Forest Service guideline (which strongly recommends food removal) and it’s been working. If, despite all our prevention efforts, a bear does enter our cabin, we would immediately contact the BEAR League for assistance at (530) 525-7297. DFG’s “solution”-issuing a depredation permit to bait/trap/kill any hungry bear(s) in the vicinity – is unconscionable.

My family and Spring Creek neighbors are still grieving the unacceptable loss of the bear family. Thanks to the Tribune and its readers (whose letters expressed their pain and outrage) we know we are not alone in working to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.
