Letter — Support public education
As longtime supporters of public education in South Lake Tahoe, it is distressing to have the very fabric of public education attacked by members of our own community. We moved here 30 years ago, and believing that we had a responsibility and obligation to provide our children and the children of our community with the very best PUBLIC education and experiences possible, we dove in by volunteering in classrooms, offering to be on committees and serving on our local education boards, both at the K-12 and community college level. We believe very strongly that Lake Tahoe Unified School District continues to provide the best possible education for all children of our community. We have outstanding certificated teachers, dedicated administrators, great support staff, and many diversified educational programs to meet the needs of every child. By the way, we have one of the most outstanding music programs in the state of California.
Have some of you forgotten that one of the very basic tenets upon which this country is built is the right for every child to have access to a free and appropriate public education? When it is mentioned that the LTUSD Board wrings its hands at declining enrollment, you are absolutely right. And why? Because we care and are responsible to our entire community of children, not just the children of privilege, to provide the very best education possible with the funding available. When your family moves, chooses private school, or home schooling, you are making a decision that is in your best interests and hopefully in your child’s. We honor the right of each person to choose.
Please remember two things, each time you choose to leave public education you are taking away funding that helps to educate your child and others. More importantly, that funding is taken from the vast majority of students who do not have the option of private education.
Our commitment as parents, grandparents and community members to public education through our deeds, our voices, our action, our involvement, and our support is the greatest gift we can give to our community of children. Please join us in supporting this, too, through your actions, words, and deeds. Supporting public education is truly putting the needs of ALL children first.
