Letter — Tahoe is like Mississippi

I was a resident of South Lake Tahoe from 1977 through 1988, and I am quite glad that you (Kathryn Reed) were not an editor of the Tribune at that time. If that had been the case, I doubt that I would have held on to the fondness that I still harbor for “the lake” and most of its residents after so many years; that is, I had the idea that people there were “enlightened” until today.

Your comments RE: Sen. (Trent) Lott’s comments — “political correctness police” — were, in a word, reactionary in the extreme. I held a visiting professorship at Southern Oregon University in Ashland last year, and I am glad to report that I could not mistake that region to the north for Mississippi, a designation I will now think of in reference to Tahoe. I am appalled; I will be sure to join the Sons of the Confederacy before my planned visit to the lake in January — an easy enough task in Kentucky, but not, I thought until now, in Tahoe.
