Let the voters decide

I received an advertisement by the South Tahoe Association of Realtors through an email. Some of the statements were misleading. I do not know who actually wrote this ad, but I believe it distorts the facts. One likely correct statement, however, is that only 27 percent of homes in the city limits are owner occupied. To me this means that in about 73 percent of the properties the owner cannot vote in city elections.

Under the heading of “Expect Neighbors To Oppose Vacation Rental Permits” the ad states “Every permit will require annual renewal and will be automatically cancelled upon sale of the property. You can bet that permanent residents will oppose vacation rental permits when notified of a pending application.” The shout out words there are “permanent residents.”

The South Tahoe Association of Realtors make the case that I have been suggesting for the last 12 years. The local voting residents of this city do not want vacation home rentals in their residentially-zoned neighborhoods.

The only way to determine what the voting residents really want would be through a ballot initiative that would let the voters decide to reduce or even ban all vacation rentals in our residentially-zoned neighborhoods as is happening all over California. I believe it would pass.
