Letter to the editor- Redistricting stifles voters

To the editor:

The recent newspaper articles regarding the redistricting of our County concern me. It is especially important to those of us who live in South Lake Tahoe. I have talked to quite a few people about this and to a person we all have one unifying concern. That concern is that in the long run South Lake Tahoe retains a Supervisor that lives in the Tahoe Basin.

One of the plans presented puts too many voters outside the basin into District 5. It sends us a message that eventually we basin residents will be effectively out-voted in our own District by those who may not share our issues. It is also possible that in the long term we may not be represented by one of our own.

the whole concept of Districts is meant to make sure that areas of community interest are represented. Just as California wouldn’t want a Nevada resident representing us, we citizens of Tahoe don’t want a person that doesn’t share our daily problems to represent us. Redistricting in modern times has often just been a way of eliminating political opponents. That is wrong and a clear misuse of the original concept. It is meant to benefit those being represented not benefit those doing the representing.
