Letter to the Editor: Roberson trial becomes lesson in justice

Bonnie Driscoll
South Lake Tahoe

I have just spent the past two months of my life listening to heart breaking stories that one would never want to hear about a world that we wish didn’t exist. I was a juror on the Ulysses Roberson trial and it was a difficult assignment. I must admit that, when summoned, I tried to think of reasons that would prevent me from serving.

I am glad that I didn’t follow that train of thought. What I experienced first hand was the working of our justice system. I am convinced that, in spite of its flaws, it is the best in the world.

First of all I was impressed by the fairness, respectfulness, and mental acuity of Judge Suzanne Kingsbury. She set the tone for everyone. Our bailiff was always helpful.

Both attorneys and their teams were sharp but respectful to each other and cooperative in making this long, difficult trial move along. And finally the jurors picked for this case were outstanding. In spite of having strong opinions we worked together cooperatively, responsibly and with respect for each opinion as we reached a difficult but unanimous verdict.

The only negative aspect to my jury service was the four pounds I gained due to the snacks provided by the judge, the court and the other jurors.

I am happy that the trial is over and I can go back to my normal life. But I would encourage others who are summoned, to take advantage of the opportunity not only to serve our community but also to experience first hand how our justice system works.
