Letter to the editor- Security needed at our schools

To the editor:

As chair of the Assembly Select Committee on School Safety, I was pleased to read that the California Supreme Court has issued a ruling that will better ensure a safe environment in our state’s public schools. In my capacity as chair I have worked to promote innovative school safety programs.

Enforcement of the court’s decision will simply allow school security guards to act in a precautionary manner by detaining students and questioning them if there is reasonable suspicion that danger exists. This ruling does not allow for arbitrary harassment nor detaining of students without due cause.

Like any law enforcement tool or technique, as long as it is used properly, it will help ensure that our children are safe in our public schools. We are not only talking about your child or their child. These are our children.

Sally M. Havice,

Assemblywoman, 56th District
