Letter to the editor- Tears falling after Sept. 11

To the editor:

Regarding Sept. 11, 2001:

My wife, my daughter and my son are with me safe for the night, but a tear is welling in my eye.

The triviality of my own life and thoughts are now somehow being weighed against the lives of so many lost.

The smoke rises up from a vacant twin towers toward a sky of gray and red. So, I wonder with my mind how many tears do you shed?

Do you shed one tear for a plane that has hit a tower in such terror? Do you shed two tears for a second plane that explodes with a fury? Do you shed three tears for the screams coming from an area called Somerset? Do you shed four tears for a building that once had five sides but now has one less? Do you shed five tears for human beings leaping to their doom? Do you shed six tears for the fathers who will not return home? Do you shed seven tears for the mothers who will not tuck their babes to bed? Do you shed eight tears for the sons who will not play ball again? Do you shed nine tears for the daughters who will never be wed? Do you shed tears while people are looking for traces of humanity among the macabre remains of a different reality?

I apologize for my own lack of clarity and cohesive thought, but tears are falling all around me and I seem to have lost count.
