Letter to the editor- Wrong site for housing project

F. Roger Livesay
South Lake Tahoe

Editor’s note- The following letter is addressed to the city of South Lake Tahoe City Council

I would like to address the proposal to rezone three acres on Emerald Bay Road for the purpose of constructing a low income disable housing project.

First, I would agree that disabled housing and housing for the low income members of our community is needed, but I do not believe that the Emerald Bay Road location is the appropriate location for high density, multi-family housing.

With the existing zoning, which I feel is appropriate for this area, single family residential, accessed from Roger Street or recreational as in a permanent BMX track, skateboard park with picnic areas are just a couple of ideas that would blend with the tourism flavor of this part of our city.

As you know, rezoning these 3 acres will open the door to rezoning the whole area between 10th Street and 13th Street as was originally proposed for the purpose of constructing more multi-family housing, nursing and personal care facilities and residential care facility developments. This I feel would be most detrimental to the residential neighborhood of Gardner Mountain and to the tourism-oriented businesses on Emerald Bay Road.

Enclosed are the signatures of 456 people who also feel that Emerald Bay Road is not the appropriate location for this type of project. If you will pursue the addresses of the signatures, you will see that the position of some who say that this is a “not in my backyard” issue does not hold water.

I am a homeowner and a 13-year full time resident of South Lake Tahoe and hope you will vote for what is best for Emerald Bay Road, not for what is best for an out-of-town developer. Please do not disappoint me and a lot of other people who will have to live with your decision on this matter for a very long time.
