Letter — TRPA needs to rethink its policy

Approximately 10 years ago at my request California’s Joint Legislative Audit Committee conducted an investigation of TRPA. I made this request in response to a steady stream of complaints I had received regarding TRPA’s abuse of its authority.

This pattern of abusive use of power is again clearly demonstrated in the recent declaration from TRPA staff regarding vacation rentals.

Requiring homeowners to surrender their right to rent out their homes is intolerable. TRPA has shown a lack of respect for private property rights in the past, but this latest edict treads right into people’s homes, literally crossing the threshold. In effect, TRPA is attempting to regulate whom people can have in their home, and the conditions of their stay.

TRPA claims to lead a “cooperative effort” in protecting Lake Tahoe. However, TRPA’s unilateral definition of cooperation looks much more like coercion to me. True cooperation involves more than “go along with our utopian vision or we’ll pummel you” policies. If TRPA cannot respect property owners’ basic rights, at the very least it should turn its focus back to issues directly related to protecting our beautiful lake — not trample into the homes of people who love the Jewel of the Sierra every bit as much as TRPA does.
