Letter — Why destroy Red Lake?

To Michael Flores and all Fish & Game Department Managers:

I’m writing this to express my concern for Red Lake in Alpine County — Fall 2002.

I stopped by Red Lake a few weeks back and was aghast at the condition it was in — almost completely drained down to a shallow pond! I slogged my way down to the bed mud and had a field day with my fly rod hooking browns & cutts to 19″ on nearly every cast — too easy. A bunch of Nevada locals showed up later and all pulled out their limits quickstyle. The water is now so low (4 inches at the deepest), it will undoubtedly freeze into a solid block killing all those wonderful fish — many of which were the survivors of years of habitation and the broodstock for the future.

Red Lake, with its proximity to Highway 88, has long been a favorite nearby destination for quality Brook and Cutthroat fishing, with occasional Browns and the obligatory Rainbows for the powerbaiters. The first three of these fish comprise the top of the heap for trout purists, and I have never seen any rough fish taken from here, so why kill them? Could they not at least have been netted out and transplanted elsewhere?

I cannot fathom what the F&G is thinking in their destruction of this once great lake. It will take several years for it to return to its former state. I for one, would like an explanation please.
