Letter: Why turn it into a big deal?

At the risk of having my opinion censored (my last letter to the editor was not published), I have included here some simple observations. I leave it to your readers to draw their own conclusions.

First, why is it that the United States has the unique ability to take a simple problem/solution and turn it into a monumental ordeal? I refer you to the O.J. Simpson trial, the Elian Gonzalez fiasco, Clinton’s impeachment and the current election debacle.

Second, why is it that Florida Republican secretary of state followed a very clear law and is viciously accused of being biased? On the other hand, the seven Democrats who compose Florida’s Supreme Court exceed their authority (unanimously) by changing the law to benefit Gore and no one suggests that they are less than impartial?

Third, while the Gore lawyers insist on a “full, accurate count” of the Florida ballots, many overseas ballots from senior citizens and servicemen and women (presumably Republicans) are excluded?

Fourth, experts agree and studies show that machine counting of ballots is much more accurate than hand counting. Yet, the Gore lawyers insist on the hand recounting of ballots. Why?

I’d like to leave you with a quote from a well-known political figure: “The people who vote decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.” This astute observation was made by Joseph Stalin. Think about it.
