Letter — Wilderness is worth protecting

Tahoe Daily Tribune

I am writing in response to your article on May 7, “Boxer tenacious in quest to protect wilderness.” I am very glad that Sen. Barbara Boxer is being tenacious in her effort to protect what remains of California’s wild places. We have lost so much precious wild land already. It is remarkable that the Meiss Meadows and Freel Peak areas are really all that is left that even qualify for wilderness in the Tahoe basin. The rest of the land has already been developed and roaded. If we don’t protect this land now, how long will it be before it too is lost? We have the opportunity in Sen. Boxer’s wilderness bill to protect Meiss Meadows and two special places outside the basin, Castle Peak and Caple Creek. We cannot let this remarkable opportunity pass us up. Let us all get behind this proposal and show we have the forethought to protect these places while we still can.
