Liberals need to stand on their patriotism

Michael Zucker

So now Karl Rove has openly joined the chorus of maniacal fascistic types with these repulsive remarks: “Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers. Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war … conservatives saw what happened to us on 9/11 and said we will defeat our enemies. Liberals saw what happened to us and said we must understand our enemies.”

The puppeteers behind our president, those in his entourage, and their neocon right-wing talk show purveyors of hate who spout their venom on the airwaves, are unable to win the argument – the folly of their illogic is exposed every day – so they have to resort to the old McCarthy-style baloney that their opponents are all faint-hearted and disloyal.

(Note that the offensive Rove made these statements in the heart of New York where victims of the vicious 9/11 attack and their families took the direct hit, and where the dominant political profile just happens to be Democratic and liberal.)

The same type of poison is heard in this market every day on KOWL, one of our local outlets for Talk Radio Network and EIB trash where perverse chest-thumping right-wing talk show hosts such as Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh excel at vitriol and nonsensical hyperbole.

My own year-long running, personal e-mail dialogue with a right-wing elder cousin ended last January when, in similar fashion, he either couldn’t or wouldn’t answer my arguments directed against the destructive policies of this administration.

“The trouble with you liberals,” he wrote instead, “is that you devote too much energy to bemoaning your loss of power and not enough to support your country in war.”

There’s no reason for liberals to be defensive about our stands on these issues. How dare these destructive people who currently control this country lecture us about patriotism – anytime, in war or otherwise? They need to get a message loud and clear: We recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag, not to George Bush.

Obviously these hatemongers do not understand what support of country is. So let’s help them. Patriotism means fidelity to the nation’s historic traditions and fighting to right things that are wrong. It means that when the country has been taken to war for ill-founded reasons that are neither self-defense nor assisting an ally, we rebel against the promulgation of those policies. Opposition to this war is supportive of the nation because this war is not and never was in our national interest. Its consequences will be felt by succeeding generations. Liberal and conservative grandchildren and their grandchildren are being willed the enormous debt that is growing daily from these mistakes. Bleeding America of its manpower and its finances for no good reason is senseless and obviously not patriotic.

The last unanswered message e-mailed to my cousin might just as well be delivered to Rove, Savage, Limbaugh and their like: “You don’t label us as people of faint heart; you don’t accuse us who hold a deep reverence for our country of lacking support for it. You got that? Maybe you better read it again. And go blow your might-makes-right attitude elsewhere!

“The energy we liberals devote to political matters these days … is not as you put it ‘bemoaning (our) loss of power’, but to attempt to get the country out of this self-destructive rut in which we are ever more deeply immersed, and back on a path that more properly represents what this country has been for more than two centuries.”
