To the editor- Our society isn’t equitable
Thank-you for your recent article on AB 25, the domestic partner bill.
The comments made by Lauri Kemper and Maggie Wattle are simply common sense and, in an equitable society, would not even need to be made. Unfortunately, the fact that we do not live in an equitable society is illustrated vividly by the comments made by Tim Leslie and Randy Thomasson. I would like to ask them both, “Why does love and commitment between two women or two men threaten you so?” They both make that same tired arguments about “the traditional family” and “protecting marriage.”
Are they aware that these same buzz phrases have been used to justify domestic violence, child abuse, laws against interracial marriage and denying women basic equal rights such as voting and owning property?
I find it amazing that any group of people feel that they are entitled to legislate marital laws that discriminate against people they don’t understand and/or don’t like. How far will these people go?
