Letter (Mike Filce): Vote for Nancy Dalton for LTCC Board
I have taught for 27 years and worked with hundreds of educators throughout my career. There are few whom I hold in higher regard than Nancy Dalton, and I proudly urge you to support her candidacy for the LTCC Board of Trustees.
Nancy is widely respected for her integrity, her reasonable and circumspect demeanor, her fairminded presence. You will not catch her speaking or acting without careful forethought.
What stands out to me is her unwavering devotion to students and to education. She is defined as well by her leadership on campus, extending to the work she performs beyond her teaching day. Nancy has served as a local union representative and has dedicated untold hours in committee work on behalf of her fellow teachers.
I’m familiar with the written expectations for LTCC board members, but the unwritten and more important ones come down to these: the ability to listen, evaluate and decide on matters while putting aside pre-formed attitudes that might favor or dismiss particular individuals or groups; to be open to input from all and willing to make decisions or vote in ways that aren’t merely “rubber stamping,” serving a higher up’s agenda, or an institutional agenda, for that matter.
Those traits are what you want in a board member, whether it’s LTCC, LTUSD, STPUD, TRPA or city council, but it’s not always what we get. Let’s get it right with this one by voting for Nancy Dalton.
