Barton Health will unveil its new orthopedic center of excellence, the “Tahoe Center for Orthopedics,” designed to treat patients of all activity levels getting them back to what they love doing faster.

The center will boast some of Lake Tahoe’s most elite board-certified orthopedic surgeons, many of whom are affiliated with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams and are nationally recognized for their partnership with the nation’s leading winter athletes.

Still in the development stages, Barton Health is working with Accelero Health Partners, a consulting firm specializing in the development of orthopedic centers. Barton also recently recruited Dr. Michael Lewis as the center’s new director. Lewis will oversee the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics’ business and medical development.

“I see this as a terrific opportunity to work with the center’s stakeholders and the community in creating an internationally recognized orthopedic center of excellence here at Lake Tahoe, while providing our patients with a level of unrivaled care and commitment to their health,” Lewis said.

A graduate of Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Lewis was the chairman of orthopedics and chief of staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He later became a professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University where he also achieved a master of business administration. Lewis was the senior vice president and chief medical officer of Priority Healthcare and most recently was the medical director of Active Implants Corporation. He relocated to South Lake Tahoe from Santa Barbara.

“We are thrilled to have such a talented individual heading up the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics,” said John Williams, CEO for Barton Health. “Dr. Lewis brings years of orthopedics and business experience to the table and we are happy to welcome him to our exemplary orthopedic and rehabilitation team.”

Working in conjunction with the orthopedic surgeons, the center will incorporate highly-skilled surgery, medical imaging and rehabilitation teams. The multifaceted team will introduce a leading edge approach to the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.

The Orthopedic Center will also be home to the internationally recognized Lake Tahoe Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship, an intensive training program for orthopedic surgeons from around the world that has been in existence for more than 20 years.
